West End Victorian is full-home renovation project of a historic home built sometime around 1888 in Greenville’s West End. The clients wished to preserve and repair the existing architectural details of the Folk Victorian home as much as possible while using contemporary construction and style for the new elements. The result is an eclectic mix that honors the historic nature of the home by allowing it to be distinguished from the new. Even though the house left much to be desired in its 2021 state, the original windows, wood siding, spindlework and decorative exterior trim remained in reasonably good condition. The clients elected to restore and repair the exterior so that the home looks much like it would have in the late 19th century. The home’s interior, however, needed major repair and updating to be habitable and to reflect the clients’ lifestyle and vision.
The original floorplan of the home was divided into quadrants with a generous entry hall with the kitchen, single bathroom and service area on back of the house. The only addition to the existing footprint of the home are a deck and a side entry porch. The attic was previously unfinished but had plenty of head height and space to accommodate a bonus room and bath with a roofline that lended itself to a small balcony to enjoy views of Fluor Field. To conserve space, we used a spiral staircase that doubles as a sculptural focal point upon entering the home. The primary and guest bedroom suites occupy the left side of the home while the right side is an expansive open-living space divided into living, dining and kitchen sections. is product of a
